Fuerteventura offers a wide range of wonderful beaches, ranging from white and fine sandy ones to black volcanic ones. Some are unspoilt and surrounded by nature while others are commercialised and feature water sports, restaurants and other facilities. Altogether there are 152 beaches available on a total of 75 km which makes the island to the largest one of the Canaries in terms of beaches.
Whether you are choosing Fuerteventura to spend some time with your family on the beach, to sunbathe, to practise water sports such as scuba diving, fishing or wind surfing Fuerteventura beaches will offer you all of this and more. Along the coast you will also find beaches for nudists and those who like to go bird watching.
Corralejo is one of the most popular destinations for beach lovers. It is locate in the north of Fuerteventura and offers several beaches for you to choose from. The majority are equipped with all the facilities you could wish for, including sports, parasols, sunbeds, showers, bars, etc. Those who are on holiday with children should visit the ones that are to both sides of the town as here you will find fine sand, shallow and clear waters and all the facilities needed to enjoy a great day.
In Corralejo itself you will find a port which offers boat trips to the Los Lobos Island. Try one of the trips that are made with glass-bottomed boast as you will be able to watch the underwater world without having to get wet. Other beaches that are suitable for families can be found in the east of the island. The one in Caleta de Fuste for example offers all the above mentioned facilities as well as a wonderful surrounding.
The west coast of Fuerteventura is mainly visited by water sport fans as the winds are stronger and the waters rougher. El Cotillo is one of the places for wind surfers. It offers an excellent coastline as well as accommodations, seafood restaurants and other facilities.
If you are looking for virgin beaches away from the tourist areas you should make a trip to Jandia or Sotavento which are both located in the south of the island. Wonderful bays, empty beaches, white and fine sand, lagoons and shores are dominating the coastlines here. This area is also popular with wind surfers as the winds here blow throughout the year. It is also in this part of the island where the speed and slalom windsurfing World Championships are held. Every year in August the crème de la crème meets here to show off their skills and to compete against each other.
The southern coast does not only attract water sports enthusiasts but also naturists as there are several beaches to be found here that can only be reached by jeep or on foot, which guarantees privacy. Although there are no official nudist beaches on the island, you will find empty beaches and topless sunbathing is not a problem on many of the beaches.
Also a must for everyone who is interested is scuba diving. Impressive rock formations, reefs, countless different types of fish, wrecks and more are waiting to be discovered. |
