Although numerous fiestas and celebrations are held every year in Fuerteventura, the most popular one and also the one that attracts the most tourists is without doubt the Carnival. It is the time of the year when the people on Fuerteventura forget about everything else and enjoy the Carnival spirit, the parades and parties that continue until the early morning hours.
Wherever you go, whether it is a village in the south or a larger town in the north nearly everywhere you will find Carnival celebrations. The Carnival is usually held between January and April and includes not only parades but also sports, cultural and traditional events, music, shows and of course food and drinks. People meet up on the streets to watch the pompous and amazingly decorated cars, carriages and other vehicles that form the parades. On top of them you will see dancers mostly female just like in Brazil but with fewer feathers!
While the hustle and bustle usually takes place during the weekends, shows and other events are held mostly during the week. If you want to have fun, drink and dance under the open air and until dawn Fridays and Saturdays will be the perfect time. Just like everything else in Spain, things are getting started a little bit later then elsewhere. The rides on the feria grounds usually do not start until 19:00 and the real party at night does not begin until midnight. It is also then when you will find fancy dresses on both men and women prepared to stay out throughout the night and celebrate with friends and family. Costumes are often hilarious and/or outrageous which is the goal of many of those who dress up.
In many terms the island of Fuerteventura is a tranquil and relaxing place to spend your holiday, but Carnival is makes an exception. The island bursts into live with music, laughter, drinks, parades and shows. During Carnival there are no rules therefore it is often hard to get some sleep at night while hundreds of locals and tourists celebrate outside. The best thing to do is to get dressed, join in and sleep on the pool the day after! It is a time that is strongly linked to the islands history and therefore part of its culture.
