Fuerteventura might not be the largest of the Canary Islands but it is the one with the most beautiful beaches, longest history and most sports facilities which altogether attract countless holiday makers each year. The name Fuerteventura can be translated into Strong winds. The off-shore winds that blow here are a true paradise for windsurfers and at the same time are very pleasant on a hot summer day.
Windsurfing is the most popular water sport on the island. The often strong winds are reason for the annually world speed-surfing championships that are held here every August. Those who are not into water sports can simply lie on the fine sand of one of the numerous beaches that stretch over 50 kilometres.
The island of Fuerteventura is approximately 100 kilometres away from the African coast. Puerto Rosario is its capital and also popular holiday destination. Beaches can be found all along the coast and invite you to lounge in the sunshine all day. When going for a trip to explore the island you will find windmills located on top of gentle hills a reminder of Fuerteventuras past when the tourism was not as important as it is today and farming was the main income for locals. In addition you will also be able to enjoy picturesque and extraordinary landscapes and a varied flora and fauna.
Sun lovers will be happy to hear that there are more than 300 days of sunshine in Fuerteventura, with an average temperature of around 23°C. It is a true piece of paradise for everyone who wants to get tanned but also for families who want to spend a fun holiday here. Please note that Fuerteventura does not belong to the islands with the longest nights when going for a drink. There are bars and some clubs available but if you are looking for a holiday in which you can dance through the night and visit one club after another Fuerteventura is not the place to go.
One of the islands most unique characteristics is its shape. It is a longish piece of land which stretches more from the north to the south than from the east to the west. It was formed due to volcanic eruptions several thousands of years ago.
It was back in 1965 when Spain experienced a tourist boom and the first tourist hotel was opened on the island. Shortly after the El Mattoral airport was inaugurated. Ever since then the island of Fuerteventura belongs to one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. There are 152 beaches located on the island, the majority of which providing fine and golden sand. Around 25 km of the beaches feature black volcanic shingle and are something that should not be missed.
While the coastal regions are reserved for water sports fans and those who like to sunbathe and enjoy a beach holiday, the inland is ideal for nature lovers. Volcanic mountains, lavascapes, protected areas and reserves and of course a unique vegetation and rich animal world is waiting for you. The best way of discovering the island is either with a 4x4 or a cross-country motorbike. Those who do not want to get lost on their own can also make one of the guided tours that are offered. History fans will also be more than happy with the numerous monuments, sights, museums and historical buildings that are spread all over the island. |
