Nature In Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura Nature

Marine Life
The marine life around Fuerteventura is varied and home to approximately 390 different species of fish which can be divided into 117 families. Due to the clear waters and interesting underwater world, countless scuba divers come to visit the island and the Ocean that surrounds it.

One of the reasons why there are so many different types and species in this area is the changing sea condition. Temperatures and salt concentrations vary and therefore offer good conditions to the marine life.

The crustaceans count to one of the 117 families and include a great number of species. There are for example the red crabs, the canary lobster, sea snails, spider crabs, shrimps and mussels. Also to be found here but mostly hidden within the volcanic rock formations that are part of the underwater world are the squid, cuttlefish and octopus.

Due to the fact that the southern coast is frequently used for fishing there is less marine life than in the north. Other reasons are the slightly colder temperatures and the richer amount of plankton that can be found here. Most of the species that can be found around Fuerteventura are bound to the island and stay in the area for their entire life. But there are also other species - the travelling fish such as the sardines, tuna or snipefish. Sharks and dolphins also belong into this category. The latter can often be seen when going for a trip with a boat.

Not only the deep sea is rich in marine life but also the sea bed. Here you will find the moray eel, the parrot fish, the gulper shark, stingrays, groupers, vieja and many more.

The tuna fish is one of the most common species around here. During the summer months one can watch the fishing boats taking off empty handed only to see them return with yellowfins, skipjacks and many other tuna fish.

Birds
Those who prefer to stay on land and are more interested in birds than in fish will also enjoy a stay on the island. There are countless species of birds on the island, many of which are using the Fuerteventura as a stop on their way from Europe to Africa or the other way around. Therefore the best time to come to Fuerteventura when you want to watch birds is during spring and autumn.

Some very rare species can also be found here. The only thing you need to see one or even more of them is patience and maybe binoculars. Good luck!

Reptiles and Domestic Animals
The Majorera Lizard and the Gecko are two representatives of the reptiles that can be found on Fuerteventura. The Majorera Lizard (lisa majorera) is believed to only exist in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote while the Gecko is a more common reptile that usually can be found on walls and near lights as he prefers the warmth.

In Fuerteventura you will also find a great amount of domestic animals. Goats for example can be found here in large numbers and have been on the island for several centuries. Other animals include of course dogs and cats, sheep, rabbits, horses and others.
