Due to the hot temperatures on Fuerteventura, the islands cuisine is light and dominated by fish and seafood. Everyone travelling to the archipelago should try at least some of the excellent fish dishes that are prepared here. The local sauces and herbs make your dish even tastier than it already is.
The gofio amasado is one of the traditional dishes that can be tried on the island. It is a mix between water, potatoes, honey, wine, milk and gofio a type of grain flour. All of this is served in a so called zurron. But there are numerous other local specialties that are waiting for you to be tried. The papas arrugadas for example which are specially prepared potatoes that are offered with a typical spicy mojo sauce. It is also often a side dish to some of the typical fishes that are common on the islands. Here are some of them: sea beam, tunafish, sea bass, parrot fish and sword fish.
Those who are not hungry enough to have a full meal should visit one of the tapas bars. Here you will find small portions that are ideal with a sherry or a beer. Often you will find the pejines a small dried fish that is prepared with alcohol.
In addition to the various fish dishes there are also numerous shellfish offered. Here is a small list of translations to make your life easier when ordering in a traditional restaurant that does not have an English menu.

If you want to visit a truly traditional and typical restaurant it is best to go further inland, away from the tourist areas. Although you will hardly come along people who speak English, you will certainly find the most delicious cuisine here. A usual Spanish breakfast consists of a café con leche (milky coffee) and a churro which is a pastry. Spaniards do not eat very early which has as a result that lunch and dinner is also taken late. Lunch here is usually served at 3pm and restaurants do not open for dinner until around 9pm. If it would be only for the Spanish, restaurant wouldnt serve dinner until 10pm or later!
During the weekends you will often see puchero on the menu of Spanish restaurants. It is a stew made of up to 7 different meats which is served with a variety of vegetables. Another typical stew is called rancho canario and includes beef, chicken, bacon fat, potatoes, noodles and chick-peas. There is even a stew for vegetarians, the potaje canario which is also often ordered as a starter. Fish lovers will want to try the sancocho canario a stew with dried fish, sweet and normal potatoes and vegetables.
Fish A variety of fish is available and prepared in all different ways. You can order fried, grilled, boiled, deep fried and baked fish all with a different flavour and delicious sauces that are typical for the area. Fish here is almost always fresh and popular with both locals and tourists. One of the only exceptions is the sole which is frozen but despite that still enjoys a high popularity.
Meat Those who prefer meat dishes but still want to try the traditional cuisine should go for the cabrito (kid), the cordero (lamb) or the conejo en salmorejo (rabbit in marinade)
Tapas Tapas are not only popular on the Canary Islands but well known in entire Spain and beyond. Tapas are small portions of food which are usually served with a drink, whether it is a sherry, a beer or a wine. It is the ideal plate for those who are peckish or like to try different flavours. The name tapa means lid which is why many believe that in former times this tradition was created to protect your drink from insects or leaves from above trees. A small dish was served on a little plate that was placed on top of the glass. In the old days it was ham or cheese today you have a wide variety of different dishes to choose from, ranging from chicken and fish to paella and shrimps.
