Many of those who are coming to Fuerteventura are here because of the wonderful beaches and the 300 days of sunshine. But there is much more on offer on the island. A variety of sports facilities and places to visit make Fuerteventura to an ideal holiday destination in which everyone will find something to do. Along the coast you will find numerous tourist resorts and sports while the inland is more historical and natural with its magnificent landscapes and traditional towns.
In Puerto Rosario " the island-s capital " you will find restaurants, bars, museums, beaches, water sports and much more. It is the largest town on the island, with a population that is nearly a third of the entire island.
Caleta de Fuste is a town which will make golfers hearts beat faster. A world-class 18 hole golf course can be found here and offers you everything you could wish for. In addition there are also tennis clubs and riding schools located here or in the surroundings. The latter usually cater for both beginners and more experienced riders.
Golfing The most popular golf course is located in Caleta de Fuste. The course was inaugurated in 2002 and has 18 holes, par 70. It stretches over 6049 metres and provides a clubhouse in which one can enjoy a drink or meal. Within the course you will find three lakes which are connected to each other by a stream. The water hazards and other tricky parts will test your skills and are a challenge for every golfer.

While most of the course is located on flat land, the holes 17 and 18 find themselves on gentle hills. The 17th hole is a par 5 and the 18th hole a par 4 dogleg.
The Caleta de Fuste Golf Course is offering a driving range, putting greens, a pro-shop, changing rooms, a restaurant, a cafeteria, terraces and many other facilities for you to take advantage of.
Soon one will be able to enjoy another four courses on Fuerteventura which will be located in Puerto Rosario, Jandia, Pajara and Cotillo.
Surfing Fuerteventura is without doubt one of the Meccas when it comes to surfing. Whether it is windsurfing, boogyboarding, body surfing or simply surfing Fuerteventura is the place to go. Especially during the winter months you will be able to enjoy great waves and strong winds. It is not for no reason that the annual World Championships in surf and slalom are held here. In Fuerteventura you will find surf schools for beginners and all the necessary equipment for hire for the already more experienced surfer.
Mountain biking Mountain biking in Fuerteventura is something that should not be missed if you are sports enthusiasts. While in other areas in Europe you will long not be able to in Fuerteventura you can. Professionals might want to bring their own bike but there are numerous places where one can hire a bike for a day or longer. In most places that have bikes for hire you will also find maps that offer you tours and trips in all levels of difficulty. Enjoy a day on the fresh air, within pure nature and soak in the magnificent landscapes you will come across.

Horse riding Horse riding is a great alternative to mountain biking. It is a great sport and at the same time a perfect opportunity to get to know the countryside of Fuerteventura. Don't worry if it is your first time on a horse - there are guided tours available for everyone. Those who are still not convinced that they can do it can take lessons in one of the schools that can be found on the island. Here you will also find easier tracks, for example along the coast.
Scuba Diving The island of Fuerteventura has its origin in volcanic eruptions and therefore a spectacular underwater world with magnificent rock formations and reefs. Scuba divers will also be able to enjoy drop-offs, wrecks and a varied maritime life. It is not unusual to see angel sharks, eagle rays, barracudas and many other species in only one trip. Scuba diving schools are located on the island and can often be found in ports. They will not only provide the necessary equipment but also show you the most spectacular sites to dive - whether you are beginner or a pro. The crystal clear waters allow you to see as far as 30 metres. Temperatures range from 22°C to 23°C during the summer months and from 17°C to 18°C in the winter.

Other sports Those who want to have a little bit of an adventure could hire one of the cross country motorbikes or a 4x4 jeep to go for trips on the island. Many go off road to find untouched nature and lonely places on top of a mountain from which one can enjoy amazing views. Discover the lavascapes, large plains and traditional villages that are located inland.
Also worth a visit is the city of Puerto del Rio which is Fuerteventura's capital and a hub of activity. Here you can go for a stroll along the port, visit museums, have a look at some of the historical buildings that can be found here or take advantage of the numerous leisure facilities.
Those interested in the island's history should not miss the ancient capital Betancuria which is located on the other side of the island and features a wonderful cathedral, excellent museums and one or the other remain and trace of the time when the first people settled down here.
If you are on a trip to find some of Fuerteventura's most beautiful beaches then you should stop at Corralejo. Its natural surroundings and the impressive sand dunes make it to a wonderful resort area. Once in this area you might as well hop on one of the boats that offer trips to the Los Lobos Island or Lanzarote.
Jandia is another place on the island that could be visited. It is a great destination for families as you will find a zoo, camel safaris and much more that will keep you and your children entertained.
A must for those who are interested in old ships is the American Star a ship wreck that sunk close to the Playa de Garcy, along the west coast of the island. Today it can clearly be seen from the beach and is an interesting sight.
In addition to the numerous trips you can make when staying in Fuerteventura there are also a range of sports available in nearly every resort town. This includes jet skiing, volleyball, tennis, fishing, water skiing, sailing, etc. The island also features golf courses and becomes more and more popular with those who like to practise their swing. |
